El crit d'alerta s'ha produït al voltant de les 3.00 hores i ha tingut a veure amb un tiroteig ocorregut prop del Centre Recreatiu Kennedy, una zona propera a la Casa Blanca, tal com ha donat a conèixer la televisió CNN.
